NEW AND REDISCOVERED: New species of wild cat identified in Brazil

READ MORENewly recognised southern form of the tigrina (Leopardus guttulus)  A newspecies of wild cat has been identified in South America by using molecular markers, researchers claim.
By comparing DNA sequences, the team revealed that two populations of tigrina in Brazil do not interbreed and are evolutionarily distinct.
Results also show the two populations have contrasting interactions with the closely related pampas cat and Geoffroy's cat.
The findings are published in the journal Current Biology.
There are at least seven species of small wild cat in the genus Leopardus in Central and South America, which are thought to have first colonised the region during the late Pliocene (2.5 - 3.5 million years ago).
A team of researchers led by Dr Eduardo Eizirik from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil collected samples of DNA from pampas cats (Leopardus colocolo) in the north of the country, Geoffroy's cats (L. geoffroyi) from the south and two separate populations - north eastern and southern - of tigrina (L. tigrinus). We used several different types of molecular markers to investigate the evolutionary history of these species," explained Dr Eizirik.
"These [molecular markers] evolve at different rates, which helps in the sense that they provide information on different time frames," he said.
By comparing these different chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA marker sequences the scientists could track patterns of interbreeding - or hybridisation - between the cat species and populations.
The markers revealed that the southern population of tigrina were actively breeding with Geoffroy's cat in areas where the two species came into contact. In contrast, they found evidence for ancient hybridisation between the north eastern tigrina and the pampas cat.
But what surprised Dr Eizirik and his colleagues most was the lack of evidence for recent mating between the north eastern and southern tigrinas.
"This observation implies that these tigrina populations are not interbreeding, which led us to recognise them as distinct species," Dr Eizirik told BBC Nature.
"This species-level distinction between the tigrina populations we really did not expect to find," he said.

NEWSLINK: Leopard group seeks crowdfunding for new camera system

The Ingwe Leopard Research has launched a crowd funding project to help fund a new camera trap system for their work in South Africa. The new system will allow images from the cameras to be sent to citizen scientists to take part in the research and help sift through the data gained.

The group need $30,000 to put in place the developments and framework needed to get the system up and running.

The Ingwe Leopard Research has put the proposal together because they want to stop the hunting of leopards and increase their protection in South Africa. They believe that the figures for population number held by CITES is an overestimate and they want more research carried out into the population levels to find out just how many leopards are still free living in the country.

US SIGHTINGS: Another Maine mystery beast: Mountain lion? House cat? Something else?

When I wrote on Monday about the “mystery beast” that passed in front of my trail camera, I suspected that many would take time to take a look at the photo and tell me what they saw.
And you did. In all, readers came up with nearly 20 suggestions, including actual and fictional animals. Then there was the apparently hungry reader who stepped out of the animal realm and suggested my photo showed a chimichanga.
I also suspected that putting a somewhat mysterious photo on my blog might get some folks to pass along their own mystery beast photos.
Again, you did.
This morning, I’ll share a couple of photos sent along by a reader named Christopher.
A reader captured this trail camera photo at a bear bait site in Ellsworth. What kind of animal is exiting, stage right?
A reader captured this trail camera photo at a bear bait site in Ellsworth. What kind of animal is exiting, stage right?
“I have a game camera picture [taken in Ellsworth] last summer during bear season,” Christopher wrote. “I have asked many people and no one seems to know for sure what it is. Wonder if you would be interested in taking a look at it?”
I was. And when Christopher sent me his photo, I was intrigued, partly because of what I could see … and partly because of what I can’t.
The nighttime photo shows only part of an animal — the rear part — so you have to imagine what the head looks like. While co-workers have said “dog,” I think the tail end looks more cat-like.
Large and cat-like. Again, I’m no biologist.
If you’ve lived in Maine for awhile, you know that there’s a long-standing debate on “large” and “cat-like” animals in Maine.

November 2013: IUCN’s Global Protected Areas Programme and WWF have signed an agreement to develop the IUCN Green List of Protected Areas in a bid to promote tiger conservation through the WWF’s Tigers Alive initiative.

The IUCN Green List of Protected Areas aims to recognise successful conservation endeavours by providing benchmark standards for equitable governance and effective management of protected areas. It is currently being developed in collaboration with pilot countries and jurisdictions including Korea, Colombia – Amazonas, Kenya, Italy, France and New South Wales, Australia. A coalition of partners, represented by WWF, will in turn apply the IUCN Green List criteria in the accreditation process for high-performing tiger protected areas in tiger range states.

USA SIGHTINGS: Mystery black cat sightings around NY park

PALISADES, N.Y. (AP) — Halloween is long gone. So what's up with the black cat sightings near New York's Tallman Mountain State Park?

Signs posted around the Rockland County park warn the public about "Suspicious Animal Sightings."

Other sightings were reported in the hamlet of Palisades. One was in a driveway. Two were in a backyard.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says wild cat sightings often turn out to be a large dog, coyote or bobcat.

Orangetown police are increasing patrols. State park police have installed cameras to snap pictures of passing animals.

These are described as sleek, long-tailed, black felines. They're larger than mid-size dogs.

No regional zoos, veterinarians or residents have reported a missing large cat.

SCOTLAND SIGHTINGS: Mystery cat sighting near Lockerbie

A MYSTERIOUS big cat has been sighted near Lockerbie.

Samantha Garden was on her way to work in Lockerbie on Wednesday morning when she noticed the strange looking creature standing in the middle of the road near Hoddom Bridge.

The 22-year-old from Middleshaw claims it looked her straight in the eye before bounding off into nearby woods.

She said: Ive never seen anything like it before.

After it disappeared, I thought to myself did I really just see that?

It was about the size of a small deer or fox, brown in colour with white tufts of fluff at the top of its ears.

It had what looked like a tigers tail, which flicked up at the end.

Im going to report it to police just in case anyone else has spotted it and its on the loose in nearby woods.

Samantha isnt the only person to have spotted big cats in the region.

In January, Aaron Halliday and Nathan Crosbie spotted a big cat similar to a panther in a field near Dalbeattie.

And last year, three mysterious cat sightings were reported in the space of a month.

Dan Alexander, of Dumfries, claimed to have seen a creature on the A75 near Newton

Big cats DO live in British countryside claims expert after analysing bodies of animals slaughtered in mysterious circumstances

Scientists believe they may have found evidence to show that big cats really are roaming the Britishcountryside, by analysing teeth marks on the bones of their 'victims'.From the Beast of Trowbridge, to the Wildcat of Woodchester, big cat sightings have sparked theimaginations of many people over the years, although bar a few fuzzy photographs there has been little toprove their existence.

Now expert Dr Andrew Hemmings believes he has found proof that big cats have been stalking Gloucestershire and neighbouring counties by analysing the remains of wild animals, which appear to havebeen eaten by beasts larger than any knows British carnivores.

UK SIGHTINGS: Evidence of British big cats discovered

Sightings of large predatory cats have persisted across the British Isles for years. While it has long been suspected that a population of these animals has been roaming the countryside, conclusive evidence of their existence in the UK has been thin on the ground.

Dr Andrew Hemmings of the Royal Agricultural University has been conducting his own study in to the phenomenon over the last 12 months and hopes to determine once and for all whether there really are large cats on the loose across Britain. To do this, he's been examining the remains of wild animals believed to have been killed by one.

Supplied by volunteers, farmers and landowners, the remains each show signs of an attack by a predatory creature. Smaller predators such as badgers and foxes can be quickly ruled out, however eliminating domestic dogs as the culprit is a bit more difficult. To achieve this, Dr Hemmings analyzed the indentations of the carnassial teeth which are further apart in big cats than in dogs.

"At the moment, there are three I have found which are weighing in favor of the cat, so it is very tentatively pointing that way," he said. "All three are certainly wider than you would expect to find in a dog imprint. But we need to let the sample size build up before we have anything approaching a statistical basis."
